Facebook spent more than 10 crore on election advertisements, BJP tops




As the election approaches, the campaign on the social media platform Facebook is catching up with political parties and their supporters. In February-March this year, more than Rs 10 crore was spent on advertising by political parties on Facebook. According to the Facebook Aid Library report, between February and March this year, 51,810 political advertisements were spent more than Rs 10.32 crore. Out of this, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its supporters are spending a large part on advertisements.

Facebook said that advertisements were related to issues of politics and national importance. The ruling BJP and its supporters have occupied a large portion of the advertisements with the 'talk of India's mind' page. BJP paid about 1,100 advertisements and spent Rs 36.2 lakh on them while other pages like 'My First Vote for Modi' and 'Nation with Namo' also spent huge money on advertisements. As a consequence, the Indian National Congress had 410 ads and spent Rs 5.91 lakh on them from February to March.

According to PTI agency, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has paid Rs 8.56 lakh on advertisements, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Rs 1.58 lakh and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) spent Rs 58,355 during this period. Over the past few months, social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Google promised greater transparency in political advertisements. Since then, he announced several steps. There are 200 million Facebook users in India.

Earlier, according to the 'Indian Transparency Report', BJP has left behind all political parties in terms of spending on advertisements on Google in the popular search engine, while Congress is at number 6 in terms of spending on advertisements. According to the report, political parties and their constituents have spent Rs 3.76 crore on advertisements till February 2019. The Bharatiya Janata Party is at the top of the list, with the expense of spending 1.21 crores on ads, which is approximately 32 percent of the total advertising expenditure on Google. The main opposition Congress is at number six on this list, which has spent Rs 54,100 on advertisements.
